Roosevelt Public Library

Dr. Lambert Shell

Dr. Lambert Shell brings two decades of experience in youth development, education, and program development, to his current position as Director.  Before joining the Roosevelt Public Library, Dr. Shell spent two years as the Director of the Danbury Public Library in Connecticut.  Under Dr. Shell’s leadership, the Danbury Public Library was able to develop many creative services and programs for the Danbury community.   At Danbury, Dr. Shell created a technology that allowed the library to lend Wi-Fi hotspots, Roku, iPads/Kindles, and develop a larger e-book platform.

Prior to his stint in Danbury, Dr. Shell was the Director of the Queens County Library’s Programs and Services department.  This position oversaw Children, Young Adult, and Adult Services, as well as Government Grants, an Adult Learner Program, New American Programs, Youth Enrichment Services, and Special Services.

Preceding the aforementioned role, Dr. Shell was responsible across Queens County for after-school homework help and enrichment programs for 2,000 young people a day, and the Youth Empowerment Program which provided at-risk youth in 10 libraries with youth counselors, social workers, specialized programs, homework help and more.  The latter program received funds from the New York State Division of Juvenile Justice and 21st Century Community Learning Centers—both unusual grants for a public library.  It is no surprise that he has been recognized for his creativity, dedication, and vision in helping young people.

Dr. Shell received the 2004 “Pacesetter Award” from the Partnership for After School Education where he was one of five awardees chosen from 2,000 nominees.  He was also responsible for Queens Library receiving the 2005 Golden Heart Award from the New York City Administration for Children Services, given to a community organization for its commitment to children/families in foster care.  In both cases, Queens Library was the first library to win these awards.

In 2000, Dr. Shell married his beautiful wife Leslie Shell.  They have been married 16 years and have a 14 year old son, Lambert Shell, Jr.  Lambert Jr. is a freshman in high school.  He loves basketball and video games.

Dr. Shell tries to live by the words of celebrated Olympic boxer Muhammad Ali: “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life”
