If a high school counselor is hard to track down, blame it on his or her caseload. Nationally, the ratio of students to counselors is nearly 500 to 1. There is some state legislation in the works to improve that statistic, and First Lady Michelle Obama has repeatedly emphasized the crucial role that counselors play.
